Conserving Body Heat While Deer Hunting

Conserving body heat is a high priority during whitetail deer hunting.

Hunting locations that face south are good for finding deer at this time of the year because they get the most sun and gather heat for deer. South-facing hillsides, ravine slopes and other areas with a southern exposure are deer magnets during cold weather.

Dawn and dusk are always good times to hunt for whitetail deer, but for December deer hunting midday hunts can be just as good. And during midday a great place to hunt is south-facing slopes.

Deer are attracted to these areas in midday when the sun is it’s warmest to eat on twigs, leaves and acorns.

If you can find thickets and food sources on south slopes, you may just have found a deer hunting hot spot.

Hi Marty,

Can you tell me if the noise and smell of propane heaters have any effect on hunting deer while you are sitting in a deer stand?

Thanks,

Ron

Ron,

Thanks for the great question.

If you are sitting in an open deer hunting stand the smell, even though it is not much with propane, may alert deer in your area. The sound made by the propane heater could be even more of a factor for spooking deer.

A lot will depend on the type of propane burner or heater you are using. For example, if you are using a rosebud type propane heater, they will make more noise and give off a bit more of an odor when they are in use. The old rosebud heater I have actually howls when the outside temp is low.

If you are using a Mr. Heater Buddy type heater, they seem to be a bit more quiet and have very little of any odor.

I purchased a Mr. Heater Buddy propane heater last season for my deer blind. It worked very well. The noise and odor was minimal, and it kept me warm all day. Again I used it in my enclosed blind.

If you are hunting from an enclosed tree stand or deer blind, scent is usually controlled much better as the wind will not be able to blow through the walls and disperse scent into your deer hunting area.

If you decide to use a propane type heater in your deer blind or deer hunting tree stand, always make sure your clothing can not catch fire and you allow for proper ventilation.

If you are seeing fewer deer while you are using your propane heater look into different options to keep warm.

Disposable heat packs work great to help keep the chill off you while you are sitting in your deer hunting stand. You may also look into battery powered electric heat suits.

I just came across a heated vest in The Sportsman's Guide that was very reasonably priced. Couple this with heated socks and gloves and you should be warm and toasty with no propane odors to worry about.

Good Luck and Great Hunting!
